Some may have forgotten, but Michigan State has consistently been there with him since offering on Jan. 31, 2016. Seventeen months later, the Spartans are still in the race. Oats told Helmholdt that he has quietly reduced his list to six teams, one of which is Michigan State. Unfortunately for the Spartans, his home-state and home-city teams remain in the running. The Winton Woods (Cincinnati) outside linebacker said that Ohio State and Cincinnati are on his list as well.

Along with detailing the criteria for his decision, Oats told Helmholdt he anticipates an August commitment. Additionally, Michigan State remains in the race for in-state running back Elijah Collins, per Helmholdt. The University of Detroit Jesuit 3-star back visited Michigan State in June, but not for football. He participated in the Tom Izzo Basketball Camp with his team during Michigan State football elite camp. What might not have been the greatest omen for the Spartans hasn’t meant the end. They remain in his top schools as he determines where — and what — he wants to play. He’s been recruited as a running back, linebacker and safety.

The last few days have offered great news, as 4-star RB Harold Joiner proclaimed Michigan State his leader and told Land of 10 why. Michigan State already has one projected wide receiver. Two-star prospect Javez Alexander committed to the Spartans last Wednesday, putting them on the board at that position. They’re not likely done. Joe Wilkins Jr. likely won’t make a decision soon, but when he does, Michigan State has a good chance to be right there. The 3-star North Fort Myers (Fla.) WR, who was offered in May, hopes to take an official visit in the fall.

Michigan State Football 2017 Match Schedule

A tumultuous offseason combined with a schedule full of high-caliber opponents and tricky road games makes getting back to bowl eligibility an uphill climb in East Lansing. How the Spartans handle the challenge will indicate whether or not Dantonio has the ability to get his team back to the top of the Big Ten East and legitimately compete with their in-state rival under his watch. It’s the season opener at home against an inferior team in terms of talent. The Spartans have all summer to prepare for this one. There’s no reason this shouldn’t be a walkover. Source Link
